Prior to joining Veracity IIR as a Senior Investigator, Smith retired as a Supervisor, Detective for Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Northwest District. Smith supervised Northwest District Detectives and professional staff with responsibility of handling all personnel matters and coordinating scheduling for maximum efficiency. He was also the point of contact for Northwest District citizens to communicate and handle concerns. He also served IMPD as a Uniformed Sergeant East and Northwest Districts. He was chosen as a Firearms Training Unit Sergeant where he supervised a specialized unit focused on training of police officers and academy recruits.

Prior to his management roles, he investigated criminal cases specializing in assault and property crimes. He was involved in the recruitment, development and handling of confidential informants who provided critical transactions and information enabling arrests and convictions of known individuals with felonies. He was a critical member of a team partnering with ATF, DEA and the FBI which resulted in numerous federal indictments on drug and weapons charges. He was involved in the Criminal Intelligence Unit where he investigated organized crime syndicates and international crime figures. In addition, he provided protection to local, national and international dignitaries. He was a lead member of the Metro Gang/Safe Streets Task Force. A team partnering with FBI which investigated criminal cases involving street gang members. He served in an undercover capacity infiltrating a local motorcycle gang, spearheading several arrests involving narcotics, firearms and stolen property. These activities resulted in the seizure of large quantities of evidence, including thousands of dollars. Smith is recognized as an expert witness in criminal street gang identification as well as instructed other law enforcement officers on criminal street gangs and long-term investigations.
